Slow on the uptake!
Having read Family Bites several times, I've only just realised that meaning of the first line is 'It was a dark and stormy night'. :-))

What triggered this realisation was the comment on a web-site I visited recently about the opening line of what's supposed to be the worst novel ever.

This is, of course, 'It was a dark and stormy night.'

Now I'm wondering if this was a deliberate joke or just a coincidence.

It wasn't supposed to mean that. It was just supposed to mean what it says.
"It was half past ten, pitch black, and raining like bloody hell." If anyone's wondering.
